Delivery first, and that matters

SoDough Square gave us a pretty simple first impression. We ordered through Uber Eats, got the Detroit Rob City, opened the box, and the pizza looked great. Then we ate it. That was the whole little arc of it. It looks better than it tastes, which sounds harsher than the experience really was. This was not bad pizza. It was decent Detroit style pizza. It just never quite caught up to the picture it made when we first saw it.

That gap is the thing to know here. Some food gets by on looks for about five seconds and then falls apart. This did not fall apart. It just settled into being solid instead of exciting. There is a difference.

What the menu tells us

The official St. Pete menu lists the Detroit Rob City at $15.99 for a small and $29.99 for a large. That helps frame our order a little. They are charging like a specialty Detroit-style place, and the expectation rises with that. When a pizza looks this promising, the taste has to meet it. Ours mostly got to good, not much beyond that.

The menu also shows SoDough Square is doing more than just basic pies. The published St. Pete menu includes a Small Detroit Cheesy Garlic Bread for $8.99 with house Detroit dough, garlic butter sauce, a brick cheese blend, grated pecorino, fresh basil, and a side of Detroit red sauce. The general menu also lists Detroit Coney Dogs, $5.99 for one or $11.50 for two, plus Caesar, House, and Greek salads. That is useful because it is broader than just pizza and nothing else.

For our order, though, the pizza was the whole point. We went straight at one of the Detroit pies and got a result that was competent and a little underwhelming. Not tragic. Not a rant. Just a delivery that opened with a lot of promise and landed at fine.

Useful expectations

The official St. Pete location lists delivery and takeout, along with evening hours only, Tuesday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. That makes this a pretty clear dinner spot, and it also means planning ahead matters a little if delivery is the goal. It is not an all-day pizza fallback.

There is also a broader pattern in outside reviews that this style of pizza is strongest hot and fresh. That is useful as general context, but not something we can pin our order on.

SoDough Square landed in the decent zone for us. The Detroit Rob City looked better than it tasted, but it was still good. That is not a glowing endorsement, and it is not a dismissal either. It is a very specific level of approval. If the draw is convenient Detroit-style pizza on the north side of St. Pete, this works. If the draw is a pizza that blows past its own good looks, our order did not get there.
