Pia's Trattoria

Pia's is by far the best Italian spot in Gulfport. The main thing this place needs from people is a little planning. Reservations are recommended on the weekends, and that sounds right. The restaurant's contact page says reservations are handled by phone, which is useful because this is not the kind of place to treat like an afterthought on a Friday or Saturday.

The order that mattered

The easiest recommendation here is the chicken parm. Can't go wrong with it. That is the dish we would point to first, and it matters because Pia's gives people a lot of different directions to go. The published dinner menu breaks out a full chicken or veal section, with all-natural chicken dishes listed at $30 and free-range veal dishes at $37. Parmigiana is one of the standards in that group, alongside Milanese, Marsala and Piccata. So this is not some one-off special or a side track on the menu. It is one of the central things they do, and it worked for us.

We also got the swordfish, and it was great. That is a short note, but it says a lot. It means this is not just a place where the safe move is to stay locked into pasta and red sauce. There was enough range on our table to make the meal feel broader than that. The chicken parm did the dependable Italian restaurant work. The swordfish kept the place from feeling narrow.

What the menu is doing

Because our notes are brief, the published menu helps fill in what kind of restaurant Pia's is trying to be. Dinner is not just a pile of pastas. The menu lists antipasti, pasta, chicken and veal, seafood, and a few practical extras that matter if somebody is deciding when to go and what kind of meal to expect. Rustic ciabatta is listed at $6 for a half loaf or $9 for a whole loaf, with an in-house pesto extra virgin oil dip. One of the core pasta dishes, Spaghetti Di Bologna, is listed at $24 with a slow-simmered San Marzano tomato sauce and Florida beef. Lunch is a separate lane, with panini on fresh baked focaccia. One example on the current menu is the Crudo at $16 with Prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella, arugula, olive oil and pepper.

That split matters. Pia's reads like a place that can cover a proper dinner or a lighter lunch without doing the same thing all day and calling it variety. The restaurant also notes that gluten-free pasta is available, while making it clear the kitchen is not a gluten-free facility. That kind of warning is useful and specific, and more places should be that direct.

If the question is where to get Italian food in Gulfport, Pia's is the answer. The chicken parm is the safest order we can vouch for, the swordfish gave us a second good one, and a weekend reservation makes sense instead of hoping for the best.
